Full mouth restoration is the individual restructuring of each and every tooth. However, rather than doing it tooth by tooth over a long period of time, we are able to do it all at once to achieve ideal occlusion (or bite). Sometimes called neuromuscular dentistry, this technique involves a preliminary information-gathering visit. The goal of this appointment (the first of three primary visits) is to determine ideal occlusion. We use special computer diagnostics and neuromuscular methods to relax the jaw muscles. Tension or pain that contributes to TMJ problems are often times a result of poor occlusion and shortened or damaged teeth. Once we know where the muscles and jaw are most comfortable we use that information to make restorations that honor that position. We like composite/resin fillings for their natural appearance and the near perfect color match we can get with your teeth. Composite fillings also bond better to your teeth, helping to restore your tooth`s natural strength. The use of silver/mercury fillings has not been used for many years in our dental practice. It has been found that old silver fillings darken the teeth, and act like a wedge in a tooth; often leading to tooth fractures. Also, some people have concerns with mercury contamination. Our recommendation is when the old silver filling needs to be replaced, it`s a good time to replace all restorations in that arch. The difference between an arch with silver fillings and an arch with white bonded filling replacements is remarkable! Your smile will immediately brighten up with the gray silver fillings being removed. In this photograph the back two teeth used to be filled with dark silver-mercury fillings and we replaced them with these beautiful bonded restorations. Crown and Bridge treatment is a long-term method of replacing missing teeth. A Crown is placed over an individual tooth where there is no longer sufficient tooth structure left to place a filling. A Bridge spans space where one or more teeth have been lost in the dental arch. The teeth on either end of the span are crowned, and are referred to as abutments. The false teeth in a bridge that join the abutments are referred to as poetics. Crown and Bridges are most often made from superior materials such as precious metals (gold) semi-precious metals, porcelain, or a combination of metal fused to porcelain. Both esthetics and function are considered when selecting the material most suitable for your case. If the roots of your remaining teeth are too weak for a partial denture, Dr. Harouni may suggest overdentures. Overdentures fit on top of the remaining of teeth in the mouth. With overdentures, the remaining teeth are reshaped and covered with metal caps to prevent future decay. The advantage of overdentures is that they do not have to be relined as frequently as a complete set of dentures because the jawbone and gums recede less. In addition, overdentures create fewer bite problems than complete dentures, and because they are stable on the lower teeth, they do not move around like complete dentures. The only denture better than an overdenture is an implant-supported denture. Our at-home whitening provides you with dazzling results...only 30 minutes of wearing trays a day. Whitening is fast, easy, convenient, affordable, and long-lasting. If the teeth are chipped, cracked, misaligned, or discolored, a plastic putty-like resin is used to rebuild the teeth and make them look natural. Usually this procedure lasts 3-5 years before needing touch-up for wear or discoloration. After preparation of the tooth, a composite resin is applied and shaped to fill in chips or to correct other problems. The resin is exposed to a bonding light that dries and hardens it. Then the tooth is smoothed and polished. Extreme Makeover dentistry usually has a reconstructive focus and involves any number of cosmetic and restorative procedures. While a dentist receives professional training in any number of dental procedures... it is the creative and artistic application of those procedures that differentiate extreme makeover dentistry from the broader term of Cosmetic Dentistry. The photos on the left depict a patients constellation of dental problems and issues. The patient had teeth that were badly decayed at the gum line under old fillings and crowns. Some of his teeth were abscessed. His bite had also changed over the years as it does with most people as they age. Over the years your bite gets worn down, which makes your teeth shorter which in turn makes your entire face shorter. Your lips lose the support from the teeth and your entire face gets impacted from years of wear and grinding. Health was a major factor for this patient as he wanted to be healthier for the rest of his life. The patient knew he "needed work" but became aware of the overall dynamics of his dental problems. Dr. Harouni evaluated the patient and determined that a complete full mouth reconstruction would eliminate all of the decay, infection and abscesses. A complete porcelain reconstruction would also give this patient a balanced, orthodontically correct and healthy bite. As an added bonus he would have an enhanced smile that would stay with him the rest of his life. The reconstruction was done with customized ceramic porcelain crowns and precision porcelain veneers. As can be seen in this dramatic photo, the patient regained form, function and mostly certainly an aesthetic effect that is dazzling and will endure for years to come. Dental Implants.... are substitutes for teeth and they are today's best alternative to your natural teeth. They offer you a permanent or secure solution for replacing one or more teeth. They are made of biocompatible materials, just the same as hip implants or similar orthopedic devices, and function as anchors or support for traditional forms of dentistry, such as crowns, bridges or dentures. Many of our patients will tell you that implants have changed not only their smiles and their overall appearance, but also even their lives! There are numerous other reasons to choose dental implants: * Esthetically, they support teeth that look like real teeth. Functionally, dental implants feel and act like real teeth. * Implants eliminate the need for distasteful adhesives. There is no longer a need to use "glue" when your prosthesis is anchored to implants. * Implants can actually improve the taste of food. With less plastic covering the roof of your mouth, you can enjoy natural flavors and sensations again. * Lastly, implants can help maintain your bone structure and support your facial tissues. They can reduce or eliminate bone atrophy, which causes "shrinkage" or facial cosmetic changes.
